    Average: 4.3 (16 votes)

Smart Communications Inc. offers data roaming bundles aimed at serving the rising number of Filipino travelers who rely on mobile data to enrich their travel experience.

Smart said starting March 2015, it would make available the All-Day Facebook Abroad, All-Day Chat Abroad and All-Day Email Abroad to Smart postpaid subscribers for as low as P250 a day.

Smart’s new data roaming bundles were introduced during the 22nd Travel Tour Expo, the country’s biggest travel fair, organized by the Philippine Travel Agencies Association with Smart as the exclusive mobile network partner.

“For many, travel is no longer a luxury but a necessity. Today, we estimate that there are over 45 million Filipinos who travel within the country and about 5 to 6 million who go abroad,” said Tourism Undersecretary Benito Bengzon Jr.

“Competitive pricing among airlines and travel agencies over the past years has encouraged more Filipinos from different walks of life to travel abroad. This positive trend has opened up new ways for Smart, as the leader in mobile services, to serve Filipinos and keep them connected for a more enjoyable trip,” said Smart international services and global access first vice president Tina Mariano.

Smart Communications, the leading mobile phone service provider in the Philippines, will now carry mobile content and services owned by Walt Disney Company, one of the world's largest entertainment producers.

Philippine Long Distance Telephone Co. (PLDT), the parent company of Smart, signed a partnership collaboration with Walt Disney to provide the Smart mobile subscribers access to Walt Disney's digital content.

PLDT and Smart Communications signed the deal with Disney Interactive, the interactive entertainment arm of The Walt Disney Company Southeast Asia, that will bring a wealth of new and exciting digital content offerings to users in the country.

The companies said in a joint statement the unique collaboration was the first direct partnership for Disney Interactive with a telco company in the Philippines and would offer subscribers access to the entire breadth of the Disney Interactive portfolio.

These include popular digital titles under the Disney, Pixar, Marvel and Lucas Film brands such as “Frozen,” “Big Hero 6,” “The Avengers” and “Star Wars.”

“With this partnership, the first of its kind in Southeast Asia, users will now have access to an unprecedented amount of digital entertainment content from Disney, including mobile and online games, visual e-books, value-added content services and other co-branded mobile and home entertainment products for the combined 75 million mobile and broadband subscribers nationwide of PLDT and Smart,” said PLDT and Smart president and chief executive Napoleon Nazareno.

Charles Lim, executive vice president and wireless consumer head for Smart said the partnership would bring world-class services to Filipinos.

"We have created value-packed bundles that cater to our subscribers’ unique lifestyle needs, and made sure that these are all backed up by the largest and most advanced network in the country today. These are the initiatives at the core of our ‘Internet for All’ message,” Lim said.

“Disney’s collection of entertaining and engaging characters for the young and young-at-heart have captured the hearts and minds of Filipinos over the years, and Smart is more than proud to be able to bring the Disney magic to fans through their mobile devices,” Lim said.

Disney Interactive general manager James Gray said as  Filipinos continued to embrace digital technology, it was pertinent that Disney provided fans content on various multimedia platforms.
“Working closely with the right locally popular brands like Smart and PLDT is important as they also seek to bring the best digital and multimedia experiences to their users,” Gray said.

Smart said under the initial offering, subscribers would be able to get full and attractively priced access to Disney mobile game titles such as Marvel Avengers Alliance, Frozen Free Fall, Big Hero 6 Bot Fight and other offerings such as e-books and online games.

Smart subscribers will be able to easily download the mobile games from the GameX portal and play them on their mobile devices. Users can also conveniently purchase the games using their prepaid credits or charge it on top of their postpaid bills.

Smart also plans to release Disney-branded content packages for prepaid, postpaid and broadband plans, enriching the overall experience of subscribers with a full suite of games, apps and e-books.

The same complete suite of digital content from Disney will also be available to PLDT Home subscribers nationwide.

The two brands will also help promote Club Penguin, Disney’s innovative online multiplayer virtual world designed especially for kids to interact with other children in the Philippines and around the world.

This collaboration forms part of the Smart’s ‘Internet for All’ commitment to subscribers, which promises to bring not only affordable access to the Internet, but the most complete suite of apps and content services for all their needs as well.

“By offering services and pursuing innovations that are both relevant and delightful to them, delivered by a robust and resilient network that is available all over the country—we are enabling Filipinos to live more and have the best Internet experience possible today,” Lim said.

Sun Broadband launched an all-new Plan 699, which allows non-stop surfing of favorite sites and a consumable volume allocation for heavy Internet activities all in one plan.

It said with Plan 699’s non-stop surf allocation, users could enjoy all-month access to their favorite sites and blogs, social networking sites such as Twitter, Facebook and Instagram, email and productivity apps such as Gmail and Yahoo! Heavy Internet users could still enjoy downloading and streaming monthly because the plan also comes with a 1.5GB open-access volume allocation, useful for apps like YouTube, Deezer, Skype, Facetime, and torrent downloading, among others, Sun Broadband said.

    PLDT goes into Cloud

    Average: 3.8 (23 votes)

Philippine Long Distance Telephone Co., through its corporate business group PLDT Alpha Enterprise, is launching a cloud-based enterprise-grade virtual desktop solution that leverages the technologies from virtualization and cloud infrastructure solutions leader VMware.

PLDT said the product would be introduced under the PLDT Cloud “Desktop as a Service” or DaaS, which would enable enterprise personnel to virtually access desktop applications and data over the Internet or a private network giving them full use of their respective desktop over any device.

“We’ve seen notable reception of Cloud technology among local enterprises, and we are constantly partnering with key IT leaders, such as VMware, to ensure our PLDT Cloud continues to be relevant and aligned to our market’s strategic thrusts,” said PLDT first vice president and head of PLDT Alpha Enterprise Jovy Hernandez.

PLDT Cloud Desktop as a Service will provide businesses easy access to their desktops over any device, cutting down costs of deploying and managing complex IT requirements over traditional PCs.

An offline mode also allows users to save any changes and updates on their virtual desktops that eventually syncs their progress once they connect online.

“The PLDT DaaS solution addresses the increasing adoption of the “Bring Your Own Device” [BYOD] trend among enterprises, lowering the cost of ownership with the use of less expensive thin clients, and greater IT security compliance within their organization,” Hernandez said.

    PLDT Offers Internet Plans

    Average: 2.8 (23 votes)

Philippine Long Distance Telephone Co. said home digital services group PLDT Home maintained its leadership in fixed broadband with a 70-percent market share in the first three quarters, or more than triple that of nearest competitor.

It said PLDT Home remained the preferred broadband provider in the country, with consistent double-digit increases in broadband subscribers which grew 18 percent as of end-September from its year-ago level, bringing total broadband subscriber base to nearly one million.

“The PLDT Group’s fixed broadband businesses generated P10.2 billion in revenues for the first three quarters of the year, up by 12 percent from P9.1 billion in the same period in 2013," PLDT president and chief executive Napoleon  Nazareno said in a statement.
“Majority of the broadband market prefers our products and services which is primarily due to the PLDT Group’s integrated approach of providing a range of high-quality voice, data, and multimedia services to our customers,” he said.
PLDT’s fixed broadband services led by PLDT Home DSL and PLDT Home Fibr serve as the foundation for value-added services such as Pay TV, video on demand, and live streaming.

PLDT executive vice president and head of Home Business Ariel Fermin said PLDT Home expected a sustained growth in broadband, with new revenue streams through various services offered in PLDT Home Telpad and TVolution.

"The increased multimedia usage in Filipino homes is evident as our Cignal over Fibr subscribers expanded by five-fold this year,” he said.

PLDT said it also grew its time-division duplex-long term evolution network to over 400 cell sites in September to fortify its leadership in providing high-speed Internet services to more Filipinos nationwide.

“The continuous expansion of our TD-LTE network will further strengthen connections at home, especially those who live in remote towns and provinces. TD-LTE will provide them access to the internet and allow them to experience the benefits of broadband technology,” Fermin said.

PLDT Home Ultera, one of PLDT’s latest services launched earlier this year, gives the country’s Internet service a fresh boost by enabling more Filipino homes to gain ready access to multimedia services such as social media, movies, games, and music through fourth-generation wireless broadband platform.

“We are bringing all these digital services within reach of more Filipino homes across the country with our various plan options,” Fermin said.

Smart unveils world’s first mobile solution against ATM fraud

    Average: 3.9 (25 votes)

Smart Communications Inc. said its digital financial arm launched the world’s first mobile-based anti-fraud security solution to prevent fraud involving automated teller machines and credit card transactions.

Smart e-Money Inc. said the innovative mobile-based, anti-fraud security service called LockByMobile will empower card users to “lock” and “unlock” their ATM, prepaid, debit and credit cards with the use of smartphones.

Smart said the product was warmly received by the member-banks of BancNet and Megalink at the first Philippine ATM Conference held recently in Makati City.

"It's an innovative mobile financial solution that we've developed to address a common pain point of any cardholder -- that of having the power to protect one's card accounts in a simple but powerful and convenient way. Having that additional layer of security can give the customer peace of mind," SMI president and chief executive Orlando Vea said in a statement.

LockByMobile was developed to enable consumers protect themselves from card fraud.

The Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas earlier reported that over a thousand incidents of ATM fraud and scams took place in 2013, resulting in a loss of P220 million, up by 13 percent from P175 million recorded in 2012.

Fraudulent practices that victimized cardholders over the years included cash and card trapping, shoulder surfing, use of information from carelessly discarded ATM receipts, card skimming, and cloned cards.

Bangko Sentral Deputy Governor Nestor Espenilla Jr. said “future-proofing digital payments also hinges on coming up with fool-proof and robust security solution through mobile technology.”

BancNet chairman Manuel Tagaza, who is also an official of the Bank of the Philippine Islands, said the new security solution was timely given the rising incidence of card fraud in the country.

“I think this will get a lot of traction.  We’ve seen that a number of cases happen abroad so the ability of LockByMobile to geo-locate and lock transactions are features that would make banks interested,” Tagaza said.
